Exploring The Elan Valley from Ty Morgans, Rhayader

Ty Morgans rooms, bar and bistro in Rhayader

Stick a pin in the map of Wales and you’ll likely end up somewhere near Rhayader where North, South, East and West Street meet at the clock tower. Here, in the heart of Wales you’ll find Ty Morgans - a bistro restaurant, inn and hotel on the doorstep of The Elan Valley.

This overnight trip with Kacie from The Rare Welsh Bit was complimentary of Ty Morgans, all opinions are my own.

Rhayader, Wales | A Brief History
Rhayader is a quintessential Welsh village that at one time had the most pubs per person - 12 for 2,000 people. With work on the nearby reservoirs complete by the turn of the 20th century, the local community is now more accustom to commuters stopping off on their journey between South and North Wales along the A470.

The rustic charm of Ty Morgans and a freshly brewed Welsh tea was an attractive sight after a 2 hour drive, as was their family suite with a well dressed double bed, twin room and lounge area with Sky TV.

Much of the building’s life began in the 17th century, the uneven walls, floor and compact shower room retains a lot of character from this period. The toiletries, thick throws and pillowy duvet adds a hint of luxury to their nine rooms.

Ty Morgans, Rhayader | Restaurant
The bar and restaurant appeared to be popular spot for locals which is always a promising sign. For a humble restaurant in the heart of Wales, the quality of the dishes were a delight. The Minted Pea Soup was very enjoyable and the flavours were perfect for the time of year. The Rib Eye Steak was succulent and the side of herby potatoes over plain chips proved a much better option between the two.

Ty Morgans, Rhayader | The Elan Valley
Just 5 minutes down the road is The Elan Valley visitor centre, the start of an adventure into the rocky landscape where the open waters and interlocking hills compares to that of Canada and The Balkans. The 6 dams are a spectacular sight, a feat of engineering by the Victorians who pioneered a pump-less water system all the way to Birmingham, England.

Even on a (Welsh) summer’s day you can enjoy this area almost alone, besides the abundance of sheep and unique red kite birds circling overhead.

It’s easy to see why this area is included in many articles for being one of the most scenic drives in Britain, you could spend days getting lost in this 'green dessert' extending all the way to Aberystwyth on the west coast.

Being so close to The Elan Valley makes Ty Morgans a tempting option for visitors, fortunately the service and dining options make it a desirable destination and not simply a convenient stop off.

The Elan Valley is perhaps the most well known area of rural Mid Wales, so if you’re planning a trip around Wales it makes total sense to add a day or two to explore.
