Wally's Deli Cardiff

Packed with goodies from across the globe, Wally’s Deli & Kaffeehaus should be on your list for every shopping trip to the Welsh capital.

Whether you’re seeking some Spanish sausage for supper, America candy, Belgian chocolates or South African snacks, this treasure trove in Cardiff’s Royal Arcade stocks the lot.
… And if that wasn’t enough, they also have a coffee shop on the floor above.

The Austrian-inspired eatery has been nominated for a Cardiff Life Award and is a quaint throwback to the early days of the coffee house in continental Europe.
Greeted with neat furniture and a retro-till, the design all tie-in to give you a taste of Vienna before you’ve even glanced at the menu.

Viennese Biscuits

I quite fancied the traditional Frankfurter lunch, but the sound of the ‘Tyrol’ was too tempting; Chicken, chorizo, peppers, olives, rocket, garlic mayonnaise on rye bread with potato salad.
I ordered mine without chorizo and olives, and gratefully the chef was generous with my portion of seasoned chicken.

Presented as an open sandwich, the colourful, abundant ingredients were on full display – a complete, but welcome surprise. The second image below shows the Tyrol with chorizo and olives.

I think the pictures speak for themselves; the crunchy salad was fresh and fragrant, the cheese crumbly, and chicken soft and tender. It’s an ideal way to sample some of the food on offer in the shop below.

Accompanying my meal was a foamy Columbian-sourced hot chocolate that came with a spiced biscuit tucked behind my cup.
I wish I saved room for a sweet after checking out their website gallery, the gelato desserts look incredible!

Viennese Coffee Houses are very relaxed and I didn’t feel the need to hurry back down to the shop below. The waiter’s were warm and friendly and there’s free wifi and newspapers for you to sit back, unwind or focus on work.
The deli downstairs reminds me of the sweet shop featured in Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory.

Nostalgia aside, the range of foods on offer is ideal for the diverse tastes of this multi-cultural capital city.
